Goldenrod
Goldenrod lets pollinators get in a last feast before the first frost. [more inside]
Tough Question
A kind of a lo-fi jazz thing that ponders why one might feel some type of way. [more inside]
frogs jamming in a swamp
I heard a vocal sample and imagined three little frogs were singing it and so I had a little fun. [more inside]
Jazz Trio Improv #1
I recently did a fairly significant overhaul to my recording setup - trying out the new rig with a jazz trio type format with an improvised double bass part which I mic'd and DI'd the pickup & blended the two together. Stereo piano is from the Roland DP-90 and the drums are the factory brushes kit from the DP-90 also.
Nico's Move
A jazzy little instrumental tune I wrote years ago for a school class assignment. I recorded this version for the audio track of a video in my ongoing Patchouli Project series (see MeFi Projects page for links to the videos.)
Better Watch Your Step (It's The Charleston Shoe Thieves)
A jazzy bit of fair warning, from the Charleston dugout's own Esme Ramsey Quartet. Featuring Esme on vox and upright bass, Joe Voorhees on piano, Gunther O'Brian on drums, and Antonio "Bony" Wallace taking a solo on his own xylophonic ribcage. [more inside]
Jazz Guy
Officer? I'm In A Band!
A jaunty (for us) Carbon 7 number from last August. I was making notes on my phone of little snippets of conversation to use as song titles. No clue how we got there, but it seemed hilarious at the time. Utterly improvisational. [more inside]
Three Way Mirror
Track one off our most recent release, a dual album set called Infrared & Ultraviolet. This is the first song on Ultraviolet. For once we get right to the point, & make a short & sweet 8 1/2 minutes. Made up on the spot - totally improvisational. Titled such because there's three of us & we mirror one another as we play. Plus, it breaks space. [more inside]
Florida Lee
Carbon 7 is an improvisational/experimental trio that creates spontaneous music at the moment it's recorded. I left a tad of dialog at the beginning, so you could here our "process." Dennis gives Ron a hard time about choosing a key, then I call out C# & start it off. Clocks in at a whopping 26.5 minutes, but it evolves slowly the entire way. [more inside]
Juju
A cover of Wayne Shorter's Juju using Gretchen Parlato's lyrics from her version of the tune. Done in a sort of 90s-ish trip hoppy style. [more inside]
Want Trouble
Moody, jazzy little tune that explodes towards the end. About the delicious dread of falling in love when both people have baggage.
This is my second big attempt at faking swing drums, so pointers would be helpful. As per usual, I started out wanting a sparse mix but it got away from me a bit. [more inside]
Asleep at the Knife
Turns out my version of the serenity prayer involves a lot more quantum sci-fi and psycho-killer imagery.
Been working on this for a good while, trying to figure out how to program drums for a slow 6/8 time. Pretty happy with how it finally came together, but I'd love some pointers. Still worried it's a bit too saturated, but that's kinda my MO. Lyrics in the fold. [more inside]
Dance Like Everyone's Watching
Carbon 7 - these things just go where they go. From our new release, Operation Fishbowl. This one clocks in at 13 minutes, with a bit of a Latin flair in spots, which is odd for us. [more inside]
The Elevator Clown
From the 12-21-14 Carbon 7 session Inter-Sol-Stice. We went from meeting every couple of months down to 1 or 2 a year, & I fell behind in mixing, so this was somewhat of a forgotten session. A minor epic at 18 minutes, but it holds together. [more inside]
Sunrise A
Carbon 7, recorded 12-21-14, winter solstice. As close as we've gotten to ambient. [more inside]
2016 Buh Bye!
I, for one, welcome our new 2017 overlords. Written and recorded on a Zoom H4, New Year's Day 2017.
Hot Mess
A jazzy/funky/noisy/weird tune written for the 60 second challenge. Just sort of stops instead of ending. [more inside]
Floating Points

Dizzy Gillespie Quintet f/ Skrillex - One Note Samba (1968, RARE!!)
Long considered a forgotten masterpiece, this meeting of master jazz artists took place almost 50 years ago in Munich, leaving the audience speechless. Features Skrillex on the Wobble Bass, James Moody on flute, and Lalo Schifrin on piano [more inside]
Asteroids
There's a saying that aging is like sailing into an asteroid field, where the asteroids get thicker and thicker until one hits you. This is a song about that. One take everything. Video.
Lullaby
I've been having trouble sleeping lately. This is a brief, improvised lullaby I made the other night to help with that.
Memory in New York
This is a soundtrack that I originally created and produced. It is about the vibes of New York City as a melting pot which is urban, lively and unique.
It is in jazz style and I used Logic Pro X.
In A Soylent Way
Carbon 7 doing our mellowest, jazziest thing yet. Joined again by flautist Fred Mitchim. Kept to a pretty sleek 9 minutes. [more inside]
Cloud Ships
A mid-tempo piece, built around the opening drum riff. Carbon 7 is an improvisational jazz/space/rock trio that just makes it up on the spot. [more inside]
A Final Word From Our Sponsor
Carbon 7, plus guest Fred Mitchim on the flute. Making it up on the spot, as usual. [more inside]
Blue Sands
Oldish jazz tune played by myself and some friends [more inside]
js theme
Another quick 'jazz' tune recorded during the week.
Monday
A short weekday jazz.
Puttin' on the Ritz
The Irving Berlin classic. Me fiddling around in a jazzy cover. Multiple vocals, a little guitar, and one persistent shaker. An amalgam of all the ssets of lyrics used since it was originally written.

Dream a Little Dream of Me [jazz version]
The American standard by Fabian Andre, Wilbur Schwandt, and Gus Kahn. This is my jazzy little version. Started with some noodling and became a proper song. And very easily inspired by the version by Mama Cass Elliott. [more inside]
The Flank of Bridenstein
I had a bit of fun with this: it's about a relationship gone wrong. I believe that the dual bass part is rhythmically interesting. Double bass and synth bass rhythmically intertwine and are coupled with a synth trumpet. There may be some Brian Eno influences a la The Drop.
My album is available for $5 download at CD Baby: The Dividing Range.

Distant Transmissions
Another Carbon 7 song from our recent show at the Carousel Lounge. [more inside]
A Dance With Creation And Destruction
A spontaneous 20-minute creation by Carbon 7. The first song from our first live show a couple weeks ago. We tripped a breaker at 20:44 or it would have gone longer. [more inside]
That Time
Mellow jazzish tune featuring mandolin, clean electric guitar, and a fake horn section.
The Sunset Star
A slow, jazzy improv thing. [more inside]
The Egg That Never Was
Another long instrumental noodle-athon. Making it up as we go. [more inside]
Hymn to the Preciousness of Human Frailty #3
A third time, recorded straight to SoundCloud on my iPhone. I keep playing this song over and over, but this is the best version yet anyway. My piano is very out of tune, though. Need to fix that.
Runnin Out of Fools
Here's a version of the old standard I did with my friend Emily. I love this woman's voice and had a great time working on it.
Maple Leaf Rag
This is my own rendition of Scott Joplin's famous Maple Leaf Rag, probably the most popular piano rag of all time. Please forgive the little mistakes; if you can ignore them, I think it's somewhat rousing. [more inside]
Midnight improv
Turn off the lights, hit record and just play. [more inside]
