Exit Music (For a Campfire)

So, y'all know that Thom Yorke has a ridiculous power and range to his singing right? Well I don't. [more inside]

Hero (cover)

First album I ever bought for myself was Mariah Carey's "Music Box", and it was mostly for the single "Hero". Accordingly, I had to cover that for this month's challenge. I wasn't sure what the hell to do with it, so I recorded an instrumental with: drums, piano, upright bass, melodica, two acoustic guitars, baritone uke, banjo, harmonica, another harmonica in a different key, some flute thing I found, thumb piano, and theremin and also some more theremin, almost all of those just playing improvised melody takes. Airport

It was 1978. I was 13. And I bought my first album, The Motors, because I loved this song more than life itself. [more inside]

All The Small Things

I seem unable to cover songs (even those I hate) without making them sound completely earnest.

Higher (the slam poetry version)

Inspired by vampire deer and DaDaDaDave and their covers of Creed, I couldn't help myself. This is a self-serious slam poem version of Higher, with a bit of my dad's Lutheran minister preaching style mixed in. [more inside]

I Go Blind

I got to really hate this mofo over the last couple of weeks. So I had no choice but to record it. [more inside]

Higher!!!

See, I think about weird stuff. Like, what would happen if you combined Creed and (a really sloppy, tuneless version of) The Buzzcocks? Heh, well, you'd get the Creedcocks, wouldn't you? And you know, I think they might sound a little something like this... [more inside]

Fix You

Here's a quickie for this months challenge to record a song you hate. Fix You, by Coldplay recorded as a really slow, lo-fi, slightly out-of-tune and very out-of-rhythm bedroom song. A tiny preview of my new pump organ makes it's way into this recording (which you can check out here) [more inside]

Everything I Do (I Dun Fer You)

Some rollicking bluegrass as a spoon to the heart of Bryan Adams, Kevin Costner, and basically that whole period of the early 90s. [more inside]

I'm Yours But Not Really

For the May music challenge. One of Jason Mraz's most popular songs, which to me evokes images of boorish fratboys slamming PBRs, wearing nice hats stupidly and casually observing how sensitive they are because this song is on their iPod. [more inside]

Leave Her, Johnny

Here is an entry for the January Challenge! It is by me and rangefinder 1.4. It is a cover of "Leave Her, Johnny," a traditional sea shanty that was sung by sailors at the end of a voyage, as they were preparing to leave their ship ("her" in the song). [more inside]

Dang Me

Woke up this morning with a sore throat and my voice about an octave lower than usual so I figured it was time to record a cover of Roger Miller's despicable novelty hit that was #1 on the country charts the day I was born. Despicable because it's a song written from the perspective of a complete cunt. So I brought some self loathing to the table, along with the sore throat and my complete inability to play blues guitar.

Sugar, Sugar

On the day that I was born (in San Diego), the Archies' quintessential bubblegum pop song was a #1 hit (in England). This is a pretty straightforward version, although the guitars and bass and drums have all been replaced with marimbas and glockenspiels. [more inside]

Na Na, Hey Hey (Kiss Him Goodbye) [Steam cover]

If, at a meetup, bondcliff hadn't pointed out this month's music challenge to me, I might have covered this song eventually anyway.
But since it's this month's challenge, and since bondcliff and I were born on the same day/month/year (same city and same first and middle name, too), I decided, hey, why not do a nutty, rushed job on it instead so that it actually means something. [more inside]

The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (Roberta Flack cover)

Raven (Do As Infinity cover)
