Written to satisfy both a Songfight challenge and the mefi music challenge. Who says you can't spook two horses with one chestnut? Featuring three buttons on my accordion.

the Scarring Party- "Follow It Down"

The Scarring Party just finished recording their new album this past weekend. We're hoping this meets the requirements of the ongoing challenge. If not, we'll consider ourselves failures as people. [more inside]

The Mefite Has Been Drinking

Some of you might remember my interpretation of mr. marx's interpretation of "The Piano Has Been Drinking" on MeTa a few years ago. A little-known fact however is that early in Waits's career, when he was still a struggling artist, he would opt to perform this version as a so-called "crowd pleaser". This is a rare bootleg recording of one of those occasions. [more inside]

My Granny's House Was Scary

3/4 of the way through my Tom Waits impression, I realized I could play the riff from Black Sabbath's "Black Sabbath" over the top.

Don't Play Cards With Satan (D.Johnston)

Took a look at this month's challenge themes and thought: Tom Waits does a much better Tom Waits impersonation than I could ever muster, and I'm just not a 'lots of notes' kinda guy. But, "spooky"... there you go! Submitted for your listening pleasure, my version of this Daniel Johnston song. With lines like "I saw my own heart laying, black with blood", I guess you could say it's pretty damn spooky. Here's a very powerful clip of Johnston performing the song on organ. [more inside]

My take on mid 70s Michael Stearns from Planetary Unfolding, with a dash of Kubrick ala 2001. It's dark, brooding space music. [more inside]

Too Many Notes in Your Sad Song

Somehow I got it in my head that the challenge theme was "too many notes" instead of "lots of notes". So I wrote and recorded this song and felt like an idiot when I came here to upload it. Enjoy. [more inside]

Shopping Cart Guy

At our local supermarket there's a really happy guy that wrangles the shopping carts. He's really, really tall and kind of looks like Lurch. He is always smiling and so into his work that I always wonder what's going on in his head. He's my superhero. [more inside]

Some Kind Of Superhero

For the MeFi Music Challenge. This one uses mouthbow, bodhran (but it sounds like a bass drum), a little bell, shakers, some little woodblock rattley things, a drone, and voice.

Amenoukihashi (Bridge)

This is a sort of a memoir of the early romantic life of the Japanese gods Izanagi and Izanami, based on my almost complete ignorance of the subject.

Bridge Across the Ocean

Came to me at work the other day for some reason. It got a little theatrical as I was recording, and somewhere in there I started channeling Danny Elfman. Hope you enjoy. Lyrics inside.

Bridge In The Sky

Fellow wants to cross a bridge, but it floats up into the sky. Woman comes along but she turns into smoke. Fellow throws a fistfull of dirt in the air, gets a new idea, goes and does some other stuff. Then there's a happy ending. Written for the "bridge" challenge, but I reckon you knew that already. Guitar by Ken Kawashima, who can also be heard here and here. Lyrics inside.

Sheepshead Bay

Just in time for the "bridge" music challenge, the Micah Berry Band finished the five-song Traveling Soul EP featuring this track (where this bridge figures prominently). That's Micah Berry on guitars and vocals, Matt Hulcher on bass, Scott Williams on drums and me on piano. Micah's Myspace is over here.

Burn This Bridge

My first one in for the mefimusicchallenge! I won't get a chance to play with this before the end of the month so I'm going to post it as is, I think there's a lot more that can be done with it (aside from generally cleaning it up a bit) but I'd love to hear what you guys think!

VCR (Perpetual Bridge)

Another song on the new keyboard. Basically, the loop is four bridge ('fill') rhythms from the keyboard's analog drum kit, so I figure it's a good enough musical joke to submit it for 'bridge'. Anyway. it's kinda made up as I go (as before, live looping with my baby, and it's louder than my last one and attempts to be less sleepy. Critique welcomed, as always.

Bit by a Snake

When Uncle J and I heard the new challenge theme was "snake", we both immediately thought of an old goof song of ours from years ago. We decided it deserved to be rerecorded...

Until You Sever The Snake

Written and recorded for the serpentine challenge now underway. My buddy Ken Kawashima brought in the North Mississippi blues riff and yours truly did the rest. Apologies to animal rights advocates, but some snakes were severed during the recording of this song. Had to be done. [lyrics inside]

Sidewinder

Tuned the guitar way down and added some banjo. This song does this thing where it equates "snake" with "girl." Like a metaphor, see. Also: it seems to play better through headphones (possibly because of the use of stereo). But maybe I just have bad speakers.

Multnomah Falls

So named because it is also split into two parts, first small then larger, and kinda makes me feel like I did standing on the bridge in between.

log

This is an old song, not written for the mefi music challenge water theme, but the lyrics kind of fit, so I decided to upload it. I actually wrote this waltz about having a cold, but it sounds very "oceanic."

Paying No Mind

The song started as a very simple guitar progression and evolved from there. I love the sound of crickets, frogs, locusts, rain, thunder, etc. Nature in general. So I found some sound clips, added some more guitar, an oboe here, a drum fill there, and there it is. Simple and relaxing.

Dance of the Ice Crab

There is a bowl filled with various amounts of wather (I tried to tune it in Gmin) and some synth (sub aqua) Just found out about this contest today, did it in two hours! The lead is very rough and rushed (clumsy?), but it is interesting. This is the first time I've tried to create a song in years..
