Take It From Me
The Archers of Loaf meet the Bay City Rollers in this humble contribution to the grand tradition of cheeky break-up tunes. Terrible puns abound, but you've been warned. From LISBOA's 2003 EP Either Origami, available here for five lousy clams. Crank it up, friends.
The Greatest Days
These are the greatest days, and this is optimism rock from The Forget.
My Dictator (Can Beat Up Your Dictator)
Putting the "b" in "subtle," Detroit's LISBOA pens a political power-pop tune that pulls no punches. Alliteration is always awesome. Sounds like: Kansas City's best (i.e., only) Cheap Trick cover band meets Propaghandi at an after-hours bingo parlor. In drag. Dig the horns, dudes and lady-dudes.
Hats, Caps and Notions
Another slice of power-pop rock from LISBOA's self-produced 2005 LP Live from the Grand Hotel Abyss [iTunes link], with a title indirectly inspired by a mefi thread of all things! By the way, you should totally pick up a copy of the mefi compilation CD: it features another track from LISBOA as well as a bunch of great tunes from some genuinely talented mefites, too. Plus, proceeds go to, you know, the kids.
Everyone's Depending on Us
I wanted to end the 23rd Century song posts on an upnote, so here ya go. This is also our Queen tribute, so be ready for my bad Brian May impersonation. Sorry for posting so much, I hope it hasn't been too irritating.
Governmentium
Another track from the new 23rd Century Album, and because you demanded it, one more song after this one.
You can DL the whole album for free from our website.
On My Way (Acoustic)
A song from a recording session I did with my brother's band (He's the singer). The band is called Beautiful Blonde Pineapple!
Working on the Moon
The second to last song I plan to post here, this one was intended to be fun, not work.
Thanks very much for the kind words on the previous songs, everybody!
Played Right ALong
The second song from the new 23rd Century album. This one is written by The Platypus.
Will The Moon Explode Pt 1
The first song off of the new 23rd Century album - "Will The Moon Explode In...The 23rd Century?" The entire album (and our first album, as well) can be downloaded here.
Despite What Santa Said
Running with the unofficial Christmas Comes Early themea one-off
from 2004, perfect for a mythical antichristmas album.
Xmas Won't Be Xmas
It's getting to be time to put together the Christmas mix tapes! This was recorded by a band I was in in 1991. Our new guitar player, Michael Cox, brought us the song so he sings lead. I'm one of the girl background singers (heard best toward the end) and might be playing a tiny bit of guitar (I don't remember for sure), and I know I played some jingle bells near the end of the track (What Christmas song doesn't have bells?). It's a goofy singalong sort of holiday tune. I like it a lot. I wish I had a better quality copy, though.
We recorded this song along with another batch of demos, in time to get airplay on KNDD's local music Christmas show that year... then promptly broke up before even completing all the tracks as a band, though I went in to the studio later to finish. C'est la vie.
Me and Andy
Thanks for all of the great feedback you guys have given so far on my other songs. This song is one I worked with my friend Andy on. He is playing acoustic guitar which I then chopped up quite a bit.
Number One
Hey all, this being my first post, I'll go ahead and explain the situation, for the sake of future songs. I write the music in FL and my friend Dave from back home in TX does the vocals in this yet unnamed project. We're still trying to acquire a sound, so we're knocking simple stuff out of our system first. This song is our (poorly mixed) cliche love song, only about a MySpace stalker. The amount of cheese should make you smile.
elevate
A calm and smooth falsetto song with lyrics lifted from an emergency first aid poster (with some additions turning it into a love song). Features guitar, bass, piano, and electronica-style rhythmic vocal snippets.
She Flies Away
me, my guitar, and a computer microphone. Simple but sweet.
Julia
Julia / you've got a lovely uvula / I wanna take you to Florida / so please say yes
We'll start a family / play lots of D&D / and watch the Goonies / on VHS
Little Orange Dinosaur
As long as songs about colored dinosaurs are on the front page, I thought I'd add mine.
This song is about 8 years old (hence the junky analog recording). It's about a little orange dinosaur I loved when I was a kid.
8th Grade Graduation
This was inspired by Senator Barack Obama's courageous stance against 8th grade graduations, which I heard about on NPR's Wait Wait, Don't tell Me back in August of 2005.
Bookshelves And Mixtapes
A dancey synthpop song about the romances of hipsters.
bench song
A happy song about new love and late summer nights. I'm not sure that the arrangement for this is done, really, but I've been leaving it alone for a while now. Features keyboards, bass, drums, slide guitar and vocals.
Imprint
I wanted to write a song with only (or mostly) four chords, and I ended up with something about the inaccuracies of memory.
Life Story
Another acoustic living room demo, same lineup as last one. This is an original, inspired by the way the my timing seemed to be so screwed up back in my single days. I'd get a crush on someone who didn't know I existed. Then, sometime later, they'd be interested in me... but I was already over them. Someday I want to record this with a cello in the arrangement.
all this blue
Trip hop or something. At its core it is still a singer/songwriter sort of deal, but this features -- in addition to regular vocals -- opera samples, moaning girls, reversed strings, synth bass, subtle sustained guitar feedback, scratching, acoustic slide guitar, tambourine, crumbly noises, and whatever else. Includes the F-word right at the start, if that concerns anyone.
in the Shadow Cast (demo)
Can't have a day with only one post to MuFi! This is from the 48 Hour Project; I spent two days in January holed up writing and recording an EPs-worth of songs that would later become the foundation for my current band. It was cold and tiring and fun...
Falling From the Sky
Easy going, pop rockin' goodness. Like many folks posting here, this is one of my old band's songs. This one in particular was written by my good friend (and then bandmate) Chris Knott - who recently moved to NYC with his band, Commas.
Through The Rain
This one is really lo-fi as I don't have the master tape and it's a 21 year old rough demo -- and I do mean rough. :) Recorded Spring 1985 in dorm room A-1016, The Evergreen State College. (More inside.)
Christmas Is Cancelled (This Year)
Un-seasonal uplifting powerpop from Farrah.
Meet Me Tonight At The Landfill
A big pop-y, jangly duet for the end of line.
Mrs. Green
Semi-acoustic cover of "Mrs. Green" by the power pop band the Posies. This was done by a 3 piece band (two guitars, one bass) group I was in a while back. (We never could find a drummer, so...) I'm singing lead and also a back up part near the end. The other band members are Chris Otto and Terri Doherty. Chris did lead guitar, backing vocals, and some keys. Terri played bass. I think I did some random percussion and guitar strumming as well. (Please delete when/if covers are determined to be a problem here.)
Love Behind
Melancholy acoustic folk-pop!
Ana Ng (acoustic)
This is an acoustic cover of the wonderful TMBG song Ana Ng, done on a four track recorder many years ago.
Though I did once see "I don't want the world, I just want your half" painted on a bridge (it was really surprising and cool to discover), we substituted "Homies '88" in its place because we had recently seen that on a bridge and thought it a bit absurd that someone took the time and effort to paint such a doofy message.
City Walls and Empires
"When our hearts crumble, sunlight filters through..."
Three guitars, trumpet, sax, violin (me), vocal harmonies and rhythm section. My band Institut Polaire recorded this song in February 2006. While we're freezing down here now, we hope this poptastic postcard from Perth (Australia) can be part of a soundtrack for your northern summer.
Color of Love
Off my band's demo.
sleep fiction
A pretty catchy melody, I think -- starts slow like most of my songs, but then picks up and becomes more of a rock track. Sample lyric: "Sleeping with you is still fiction, so missing it must be a contradiction." Features vocals, guitars, piano, drums, strings.
Shameless Ways
Another cut from my band's demo.
Shimmy Shag
Grab your surfboards, your transistor radios and your beach blankets: it's time for a happy 1950s-style Beach Party!
say goodnight
The city outside your bedroom window doesn't care if you're lonely. I guess this song is about the feeling of hopelessness. Slightly more uptempo than my previously posted songs, this one features slide guitar, non-slide guitars, drums, piano, strings, and guest appearances by Riadsala (bass) and kerry and casio (background vocal).
Waiting For You
This is the first song of at least 6 that I will release on my first, self-released EP in the near future. I'm currently figuring out how to arrange a live set with my music as everything was played and/or arranged by myself.
I now release my music under the moniker mixedtape. The Freudian Slipper was my old name :)
Welcome to the Jungle (acoustic)
This is an acoustic cover of the very excellent They Might Be Giants song Welcome to the Jungle. As a gag, the beginning instrumental bit copies the Guns N' Roses song Welcome to the Jungle.
Though my old "band" did this, just about every instrument on this track (including the backup vocals) was done by one bandmember.
the long lost light
A slow and sad song I wrote and recorded after a breakup/separation a few years ago. Features a falsetto chorus and acoustic guitar, including an e-bow undercurrent.
When it Hits My Blood
Cover of a John Vanderslice song about Requiem for a Dream.
Eponymous 4 - Our Best Wasn't Enough
And now for something slightly more urban ... I was channeling ACO's "Yorokobi Saku Hana" when I wrote this one. At the time I wrote the lyrics, a lot of people I knew were going through break-ups. I'm still not a singer. Vocals are rough. Sorry.
Gargoylehead (Acoustic)
Gargoylehead is a silly song about a statue in a family's house that comes to life when the family leaves for the night. It trashes the house and eventually falls asleep while watching a movie on cable. The family comes home to a great surprise.
The song was performed by the band I was in in high school (we are long-defunct now) and this recording was done several years ago for fun. I hope you like it.
already lovers
A quiet, pretty song about online dating. Features guitars, vocals, and pseudo-orchestral touches.
Call 0600
Some boppy electronic pop. Inspired by chip tunes.
Summer's Ending
Now that the summer's ending, there's a cold wind blowing in / So we've got to build some shelter, before it rains again
the Hours -- by the Notes and Scratches
A cluttered and messy rock song from our record Uh-Oh. I play guitar and sing in this band (and play the singing saw on this track!).
Mamonaku
This is a song by my band, Institut Polaire.
take this pain
It's a slow starter, and once it gets going it's incredibly repetetive. But, uh, I like it that way. Features moi on vocals (through a simulated guitar amp) and all instruments.
