Way Back When (studio version)

Final version of the rough acoustic demo I posted a few days back. A bit of blue-eyed soul, a bit of BONNY era Prefab Sprout, a bit of TEMPTED era Squeeze and a few 10cc harmonies, and the guitar from Alison. Did I miss anything? [more inside]

Way Back When

In which my Prefab Sprout obsession results in a nakedly sappy love song speculating about the origins and end of the universe. [more inside]

Live and Learn

Final version of the song I posted a few days ago. Also my New Year's challenge entry. The usual 70s-tinged nonsense. [more inside]

The Waiting Game

I've always wanted to write a blue-eyed Northern Soul stomper. And it appears now I have, kinda. Grab some Lucozade and a towel and we'll have a MeFi meetup down at the Wigan Casino. [more inside]

Your Ball and Chain (slight return)

I remixed this song I posted a few days ago taking into account some of the feedback and I like it a whole lot better now! [more inside]

Sunblind

OK, this is a shitty mix, I freely admit, but I need to draw a line under it for the moment. Features an underwhelming banjo solo -- in fact the only thing I can play on the banjo as yet -- and a bunch of notes I really can't hit, but I still like it for the way it kicks off at about 1'45, and in particular the lift at 2'20. It's a hell of a lot of fun to play live too. [more inside]

Move On (What you got?)

This is a balls out little rush of a song that I came up with on my iPhone of all places. After I got the first line I realized it was going to have to continue in the same vein so I went over to AskMe for help. I just meant this to be a rough sketch but I ended up liking the feel of it even though it's ridiculously ragged. The song's a sort of statement of intent, I guess. Equal parts Elvis Costello, Cheap Trick and the Stones, more or less. [more inside]

Airport

It was 1978. I was 13. And I bought my first album, The Motors, because I loved this song more than life itself. [more inside]

Found Out About You

The nearest I ever got to a hit record. 1995-6 4-track cassette demo (God knows how I got all those guitars happening) of a song for my then band Earcandy. I really think this could have launched us if we hadn't all had day jobs. Pretty much irrelevant now, but at the time when we played it we felt like Gods! As it was, we got a bunch of radio play but never followed through because the drummer quit. Oh, well.

Hold on to Love

For some reason I entered the New Year feeling despondent, so I wrote this to cheer myself up. So I suppose it's a resolution. [more inside]

On Valentine's Day

On February 11th, 1963, the poet Sylvia Plath committed suicide. This is the song the elderly painter, Mr Thomas, who lived in the flat below hers, did not write about the event. An odd little ballad in 7/8. [more inside]

A Town with no Pity

Epic 60s janglepop meets Northern Soul, final version of the tune I've been evolving here and on The Music Incubator. All based on a little piano riff, and therefore my August challenge entry too. [more inside]

Rock, Paper, Scissors (the single mix)

Shorter, sweeter mix of this responding to some of the suggestions on the last one. Lost the first intro, cleaned up the drums, changed the harmonies slightly, brought up the melody guitars, and dropped in a blazing little guitar solo, even if I do say so myself! It's under three minutes now -- give it a listen! Now just have to figure out the B-side...

Ten Years in a Hundred Dollar Suit

So Aimee Mann and Bruce Springsteen are in a bar discussing the greatness that is Living on a Prayer, but what they haven't noticed is that Toto are at the next table, and Sonic Youth just walked in the back... [more inside]

Simple Town (Full Version)

Feisty powerpop version of the a capella song I posted for the challenge. Man, this was another freakin' difficult song to mix, not least because it was the first one I did on my Yamaha HS50m monitors which Chococat recommended. You know when you go to the bathroom in the middle of the night in a hotel and accidentally turn on the overhead fluorescents and catch yourself stark naked in the most unflattering, pore-revealing detail and sort of gasp in horror? These speakers are like that. You fight them every inch of the way, not trying to get the song sounding good, but just to stop it sound so goddamn bad. [more inside]

Shotgun

The only good thing about having a sore throat is that for a brief window of time I can hit some low notes. I was too sick today to concentrate on any real work but this was lying around half-finished so I took it another quarter of the way. Despite the title, this is not a murder ballad but a song about the day I realized Ms. unSane might (eventually) become Mrs unSane. Features a totally fake Hawaiian guitar, one of the rare moments where my surf playing has spilled over into one of my songs. [more inside]

Summer's Calling

This is the second of two summersongs... this one is my attempt to shake off the summertime blues and write something genuinely hopeful, complete with a spoken intro and healthy helpings of cheese and bubblegum all round. [more inside]

Back on my Back Again

Another slice of 1995 Big Star/Television influenced indie ephemera from my 4-track cassette box. I still really love this guitar riff and the herky jerky power pop stuff at the end of the chorus. A song about not wanting someone to feel bad for dumping you. When I first heard Sloan, I thought 'man, they stole my sound' although really we both stole Velvet Crush's. [more inside]

Seventeen Below (Electric Version)

Someone suggested I re-record this with a heavier treatment. So I threw the kitchen sink at it. Guitars, guitars, more guitars, a cello section, some HEAVY guitars, harmonies and a bonus weather forecast. Don't let the quiet beginning fool you. [more inside]

Darker Shade of Blue (Electric version)

Amped up version of a song I posted a few days ago. Gnarly guitars, Hammond organ, sweet harmonies, in a Television / Big Star / Matthew Sweet frame of mind. [more inside]

Darker Shade of Blue

Another semi-autobiographical 1995 slice of cheerful melancholia. But a pretty guitar riff and one of my favorite choruses to sing, even if I never really could hit the last note. There's an electric version of this with more of a Big Star / Matthew Sweet feel, but darned if I can find it and anyway I like this one. [more inside]
