GOLFSAUCE
I thought I'd cross-post this here, since it's hard to hear 50's television / Ren and Stimpy style "light music" without feeling at least a little bit better about your day. PLUS, it's the latest in my series of songs I've written for my dog, and there's a happy story to go along with it. [more inside]

Into the Night
I was determined to get something into the mefi challenge this month, and what's better subject material than Dracula? Nothing.
The mix isn't the best, but I've been playing with it too long, so I'd rather have it out there in the atmosphere. Why not.

Simple Town (Full Version)
Feisty powerpop version of the a capella song I posted for the challenge. Man, this was another freakin' difficult song to mix, not least because it was the first one I did on my Yamaha HS50m monitors which Chococat recommended. You know when you go to the bathroom in the middle of the night in a hotel and accidentally turn on the overhead fluorescents and catch yourself stark naked in the most unflattering, pore-revealing detail and sort of gasp in horror? These speakers are like that. You fight them every inch of the way, not trying to get the song sounding good, but just to stop it sound so goddamn bad. [more inside]

Partyin'. - Hamps.
A very crap-quality song I wrote using three chords on a synthesizer keyboard and a terrible singing voice. Anyone who knows me knows that this entire thing is a massive satire, so don't take the lyrics or the cheesiness at face value. On second thought, I am probably even more cheesy than this song tells. Para ti no es premio
Personal musical standards and the perception/expectations of listeners. Discuss. You may consult the course text: "Seething Resentment: A Practical Guide"
Prompted by a response I just made to a comment by Karlos on a recent upload of mine, I thought that this might be an area of wider interest - it's certainly something that intrigues me.
Here's my response to Karlos: What I'm trying to do with stuff like this is to test some of my own perceptions, standards and boundaries. I get quite a lot of comments about my stuff being "smooth" or "well produced/mixed" and gentle criticism about it being "too musicianly" or "complicated". These are nice things to hear and MeFites are generally kindly and well-meaning souls, but I guess I want to experiment with what listeners actually perceive as important and unimportant, critical and uncritical. What do people really hear in a track?? What do they filter out?? Why?? Hence I deliberately left things in this mix of a fairly average track (so I'm not fucking up something I think is really good) that normally I wouldn't allow to be "released" just to see if anyone says "Christ, those backing vocals suck the big one and totally ruin the track".
Naturally the "experiment" depends upon people actually listening to a track! But that's beside the point in terms of a wider discussion on this topic. How much, for instance, do you care if parts of a vocal or guitar solo are out of tune?

Shotgun
The only good thing about having a sore throat is that for a brief window of time I can hit some low notes. I was too sick today to concentrate on any real work but this was lying around half-finished so I took it another quarter of the way. Despite the title, this is not a murder ballad but a song about the day I realized Ms. unSane might (eventually) become Mrs unSane. Features a totally fake Hawaiian guitar, one of the rare moments where my surf playing has spilled over into one of my songs. [more inside]
