A simple pop song for synth, drum machine and vocoder. Featuring another cheeky sequence from the Prophet-6! [more inside]
Soothin' Synths, Part 2: a Synthy Lullaby
We have a Prophet-6 at work right now and I just found out that the sequencer is polyphonic. Programmed a chordy little loop and messed around with it a bit while grabbing it on my H2. Hope you enjoy the pure, unaccompanied sound of this gorgeous synthesizer!
if you want me
vocodin' [more inside]
These Few Hours (Original Soundtrack)
Instrumental piece I recorded for the Short, "These Few Hours".
"I can't do anything without thinking about you next"
Just having a play on my day off
Finally taking the full rig for a proper spin again!
An Even Newer Kind of Beat 2
Fanfare for the common synth
Does this belong in a movie?
There's a song with words and stuff that this was originally based on, but I like the instrumental version better. Mellow, textured, haunting, builds slowly. What do you think?
OP-1 Clicks and womms
Recently got a Teenage Engineering OP-1 and this is a first attempt to put the 4-track through it's paces. It's a noisy little thing, extremely digital. In addition decided to put this together without any sequencers so the rhythms are... inconsistent. This is straight out of the device, no additional processing.
Soundtrack I Recorded for the Short "Inhumane"
I recently recorded this soundtrack for the short "Inhumane". I have linked the video below if watching the finished product is more your speed. let me know what you think.
A Natural Carpet
A psuedo-guitar-like ambient song performed on modular synthesizer. This is the third track on my new release Nereus, available on Bandcamp. [more inside]
A short improvisation for polyphonic synthesizer and 16-step sequencer
Building a beat around an organ loop [more inside]
Featuring the Line 6 M9 providing a little bit of chorus, delay and reverb... and the old classic, the Line 6 POD providing the 'amp'. Full Line 6 rig today.
Solar Eclipse Overture
I know the 2107 eclipse over the U.S. has come and gone, but hey, there's always another one. [more inside]
Cymbal Drone in G Major
Digging back into some old ambient/noise/drone ideas. Synth, guitar, and bowed cymbal. [more inside]
Tough Love Black Eye
Punk, metal, jazz, slack, folk and noise. This pretty much typifies the grab bag that was my band, Big Ghost. Like trying to get Pavement and RHCP to agree on California rock. It's a mess, but it was our kinda mess. [more inside]
A synthy jam about the magic of summer, youth and minivans.
And the Sunrise Welcomes You Home
A short instrumental piece (featuring synth) in which I basically have fun building from a loop. This is my entry for the MeFi Music challenge to submit music inspired by a MeFi post (I Saw This Thing On The Blue And...). Credit actually goes to three MetaFilter-related posts from last month: two MeFi posts by not_on_display and one MeFi Music post by ignignokt; they inspired me to create electronic music again after a decade+ hiatus. A Small Grey Box Filled With Joy
I made this upbeat, major-key, low-fi-sounding jam entirely on my OP-1, the same gizmo used in these videos. The transitions aren't as good as they could be, but they're definitely a level up for me. The whole thing falls apart at the end in a glorious heap. A good LET'S GO OUTSIDE AND PLAY instrumental. [more inside]
Mouth of the Coldest Seas
A tribute to the ancient hidden source of all cold seas and those that watch over it. With vocals by my friend who sings in an actual early music choir! It's also got square waves, organs, and sometimes ambiguous chords.
my idea 21
Quick song recorded this morning on Music Memo with (automatically added) bass and drums, and some synthesizers and (fair warning) voice-cracking singing. [more inside]
This is meant to evoke being chased at night in a 1970s city. [more inside]
You're So Dangerous!
An upbeat ditty about falling in love, blah blah blah. Cobbled together during my currently-on-hiatus 52 weeks project. Inspired by Holiday-era Magnetic Fields. [more inside]
The Fall Season
I wrote this on a train going into the city. [more inside]
Took to it Like Water
The bones of this song were a proposal for a corporate jingle I was writing... [more inside]
just havin a play
So this is another song, audio is taken directly from the youtube video here. This is a live performance, did a session in the lighting hire and install company I work for over the weekend. This video forms part of a competition entry for our band. [more inside]
Piano, guitars and drum Instrumental, some unresolved tension. [more inside]
Something fairly new. This is two of us playing live, me on bass and singing, and synth and drum machine from Magnus. [more inside]
Based on the John Maus version of Molly Nilsson's original.
Needles and Fire
A song about alternative histories and intangible futures.
bit of a chord sesh
I figured out how to use the arpeggiator on my op1 (actually the 'endless' sequencer). Brings to mind seeing out from the home village on an epic quest.
Return to Maridia
My train rides lately have been spent either a) playing with my synthesizer, or b) playing through Super Metroid on my phone. This captures pretty nicely the feeling of wandering a submerged subterranean maze, looking for secret side tunnels while kinda low on life (though with a couple energy tanks in reserve).
Some synth experiment from the vault...2nd half goes more analog...
Goblin Rip-off please help
At 0:32 I start ripping off a Goblin riff and I can't find the song that I am ripping off. It's not off of Roller or Profondo Rosso... Any insight would be appreciated.
3 kids on the square
the big synth at the beginning is live-performed on a Roland JX-8P on the patch called "Van Halen"!!!
savory for me
Just an experiment of guitar electronic fusion I've been playing with. I'm planning on doing an album-full of these types of songs soon.
The Guardian of Phobos
Piano vs. Electronics. Kinda epic even though it's not all that long! [more inside]
From the Prehistoric EP (2008)!
Hot Collie Bounce
You Can't See It
My son asked me to record his heartbeat for some school thing a few months ago. I had this heartbeat lying around so I added some Moog to it and Bob's your uncle it became a synthpop song.
A Legacy Denied
Finally finished my latest project, VOIDBREAKER. Ominous space synths, gritty breakbeats and a consciously gritty production. This is the fourth track from the EP just released on Spotify. [more inside]
Blank Maps (Cold Specks cover)
Got a MIDI controller, which I'm superdy duper excited about, and figured I'd put it to work by fulfilling Greg Nog's Mefi Cover Challenge, covering Cold Specks' Blank Maps. Quick 'n dirty.
A loud, frenetic jam in F#, dancing between half-time/double-time, with synth slap bass!
a new kind of beat
No drum beat or melody. Just some interlocking synth arps. For the Sunday crowd.
