I don't know what I like to do anymore
What's in it: a sad, simple little guitar / vocals song.
Nest Mess
Breezy song about hanging out in LA [more inside]
Streets of New York
Here is the much improved, finished version of a song I posted before in "help me describe this." Expansive, trance-like, sort of indie folk song.
Does this belong in a movie?
There's a song with words and stuff that this was originally based on, but I like the instrumental version better.
Mellow, textured, haunting, builds slowly. What do you think?
Many Chords
My wife had a pessimistic guitar instructor when she was younger, one of those "there's nothing new in music, there's only 12 notes" kind of musicians. So, as a rebuttal to that mindset, here's an in-progress 50+ chord progression that I think is turning out swimmingly so far.
Let's try that again
This is a complete reworking of a song I posted before (17) which is now...prettier? Mellower? Flows more? What do you think of my new direction?

Irish traditional - Old Friends Set
So I've been consumed with learning Irish traditional music for the past year, and was finally able to trek down to VA to see my old pal Ian and have him help me record a few sets of tunes. This rough mix is so far my favorite of the bunch. [more inside]
Slipstream
A piece I wrote and recorded with a friend as part of an instrumental post-rock project.
Summer Follows Redux
Impossible Bookings is a collaboration I kinda sorta foisted upon cicadaverse, who initially posted the instrumental version of this track 6 months ago. I put words to what he'd created, we each reworked what we had into shorter form, he remixed my vocals and added to the instrumentation...then life happened to us both. We caught up recently after a few months off, remastered it, and called it good. [more inside]
Asleep at the Knife
Turns out my version of the serenity prayer involves a lot more quantum sci-fi and psycho-killer imagery.
Been working on this for a good while, trying to figure out how to program drums for a slow 6/8 time. Pretty happy with how it finally came together, but I'd love some pointers. Still worried it's a bit too saturated, but that's kinda my MO. Lyrics in the fold. [more inside]
Be a light
It's been a while since I posted anything, so here goes with a slightly off-kilter, folksy, moody vocal and guitar piece.
Cymbal Drone in G Major
Digging back into some old ambient/noise/drone ideas.
Synth, guitar, and bowed cymbal. [more inside]

Every second of the time
As long as I am posting moody, folksy songs with voice and guitar...here's another one!
Tough Love Black Eye
Punk, metal, jazz, slack, folk and noise. This pretty much typifies the grab bag that was my band, Big Ghost. Like trying to get Pavement and RHCP to agree on California rock. It's a mess, but it was our kinda mess. [more inside]
Jusgonnatellastory
A mix of some guitar, some electronic dancey stuff and spoken word by my son.
Fisherian Runaway (poison frog song)
First song written and recorded since I moved to Napa. Spooky grungy punk that maybe doesn't reflect my sunny new locale. Written about my drummer's frustration with dating, online and otherwise. Lyrics in fold. [more inside]
Elvis Presley Slow Down
A little finger style Elvis Medley. As slow as I could manage.
Esme
A song written for my 4 month old daughter. [more inside]
When the Curtains of Night
I'm happy to present my collaboration with not_on_display: this is our version of a neat little tune that was included in The American Songbag (a 1927 folk song collection by Carl Sandburg); the song there was itself derived from a late 19th-century song by William S. Hays. [more inside]
my idea 21
Quick song recorded this morning on Music Memo with (automatically added) bass and drums, and some synthesizers and (fair warning) voice-cracking singing. [more inside]
The Leaving of Liverpool
I had a great time collaborating with billiebee on a cover of this traditional folk song/sea shanty. The goal was to record a simple arrangement that was different from the more lively covers out there -- to borrow billiebee's phrase, a gentler version. I'm hoping our rendition highlights the lovely melody of the song. [more inside]
Sleepwalker (Cover)
"Maybe I could be the one they adore—that could be my reputation." I had The Wallflowers' "Sleepwalker" in my head earlier and decided to learn the chords and record it. [more inside]

Thoughts in B-flat
In the past couple of weeks, I found myself going back to a piece that I'd started working on a few years ago -- probably because it's in a slower triple meter that's somewhat calming for me. This is a condensed one-minute version, featuring piano and guitar, for the 60 Seconds and Under #2 MeFi Music Challenge. [more inside]
