Little Wing
When I first started playing the guitar I was obsessed with Jimi Hendrix (okay I still am). I spent hours learning as many solos as I could and listened to the blues album over and over again. At the end of the day though, this has always been my favourite Hendrix song. It's beautifully understated, short and sweet! [more inside]
So Does Everybody Else, Only Not So Much
Adaptation (more or less) of an Ogden Nash poem of the same name. Essentially an apology from an aging man who spends his time boring people with the same stories.
in memories
A collaboration with non-mefite Riadsala, who sometimes records bass for me. This is a pretty strange track, with a lot of effects going on, with a weirdish tempo change into the chorus which is backed by something in the vein of guitar shredding. [more inside]
Fairytale
Mostly acoustic strumming. Maybe the simplest song I've ever written - but I like it, for a' that. [more inside]
Faster Peach
Your eyes, diamonds rough as a fist, chipped away. [more inside]
Unstress
Stressed out? Listen to this healing song and follow it's prescription to the letter! [more inside]
lullaby
I was about to depict a complex scenery, but it wasn't very popular the previous times I did. Let's say that this is one with a strange groove. Like, hypnagogic. To be more specific, let's say some fairies are gathered around a sleeper. Maybe black, african fairies. Summoned by a griot. Softly singing. Well, forget it.
star shapes
This is a song i've been trying to put together for a year or two now. It uses my usual punk + x formula, where here, x = rawhide. The second half is big, noisy, and was tons of fun to make. I"m kinda fond of the lyrics Hope you enjoy. lyrics inside [more inside]
Not My Fault
Random rocker from a year ago. The chorus is a little short.
Pulling Hard Against the Stream
Someone wondered what I'd sound like with instrumental backing. Here you go. [more inside]
Weighin' me down
English, French, backup vocals, slide, banjo, bam!
Jessamyn's Song
Well boys and girls, I imagine this is what it would sound like if one was lucky enough to hang out on the front porch with our favorite banjo picking librarian. Yes, that's jessamyn on banjo! (collaboration)
River fences
Guitar diddy [more inside]
Oh, but to begin!
Just me and the acoustic. Short and sweet. About a year old. [more inside]
A Shrieking Blue
Very short, two sparse verses, some pickin'. [more inside]
Your Melodies
Basically a song about a failed friendship, which as we all know is best done with several banjo tracks!
Cough It Up
A song about dying [more inside]
Sally's Songs (Tom Waits Style)
So I went for the triumvirate: it's a spooky song with overwrought instrumentation and Tom Waits style vocals. Hope you enjoy. [more inside]
Gravity
Instrumental guitar overdubbing experiment. Unfortunately, not spooky.
Prowling Creature
I hate describing my own songs, so have at, everybody! Female vocals, guitar, bass, and drum machine.
Please enjoy! [more inside]
surely, something is meant by this (goddamn)
written and recorded very quickly: a couple of childhood experiences made into a little parable set. hope you enjoy. it's fun as hell to sing. [more inside]
My Soul Awoke
A rough demo, a single take. My attempt at an acoustic, romantic kind of thing. Inspired by life! Damn those high notes. [more inside]
Too Many Notes in Your Sad Song
Somehow I got it in my head that the challenge theme was "too many notes" instead of "lots of notes". So I wrote and recorded this song and felt like an idiot when I came here to upload it. Enjoy. [more inside]
Take this Hammer
Cover of a Leadbelly tune. [more inside]
Hopeful Hopeful
A big ol' composition kind of song. Just a little bit like "post-rock" I guess. As before but this time with multiple takes, stereo, and fun little stuff scattered all around. It's also my first project using Logic Pro, which seems to rock
the mission has failed
sassy little song featuring my new glockenspiel. [more inside]
Faint Glimpse
Two minutes of mellow guitar picking on a song I sketched out. Just sit back and relax. [more inside]
Pemulis
A Derailleur song with driving guitars, keyboard goofery, and lyrics from the point of view of a peripheral character in Infinite Jest. [more inside]
For Reverend Green
A simple cover of a song from Animal Collective's newest album, which MetaFilter greeted with a great deal of enthusiasm.
I was kind of reluctant to upload this one, because there are some things about the singing that I don't like (mostly timing and range), but I'm curious to hear what you guys think of it.
Rock n Roll Radio
A really poppy Derailleur song, written and sung by our bass player. [more inside]
Eggdrop
First post, so I'll start with something short and old. This one is sort of bouncy. Country/Dixieland style. Guitar, bass, and drums. No vocals. [more inside]
The Million-Pound Shithammer
A mess-around-at-practice riff that grew into a song. This one knocks down some walls live. [more inside]
Ribcage
I'm the drummer in a band with my husband and one of his brothers (called Birds Anonymous) and this is one of our "moody" tunes, recorded "live" in our laundry room. [more inside]
Crazy Baby, Lazy Charlie
In 1993 I spent every weekend between the Spring Bank Holiday recording songs that I'd written on my four-track tape recorder. I'm not sure where they came from. On August Bank Holiday Monday I mixed down the final album - It's Amazing What Some People Can Believe - and copied it onto C90 cassettes. The run almost reached double figures. A raging success, then.
This is the first track on Side One. The almost fifteen years' distance allows me to admit that I like it very much.
Calhoun County Blues
This is a true story of my ventures right after Katrina.
I recorded the tracks yesterday on my birthday.
It is a condensed version of the song. The original story still continues today while living in Kentucky
hungry heart
This is a lazy pseudo-live cover of the Bruce Springsteen song, recorded on a whim a couple of years ago.
March On
Feeling like the day won't end even through the dawn,
Tommorrow brings the thought of hope helping us March On.
Sudenpolkka
If someone would just make a damn album that sounds like this already then I wouldn't have to be swiping vocals and doing it myself.
butterfly suite
I've decided to work some more on two previous posts to create a more enjoyable tune. I wanted to include some kind of march too. I think I'm through with this white butterfly now.
Reno Dakota
A Magnetic Fields cover I recorded recently. I've been working on my singing for a while, and I was mostly wondering if anyone had any suggestions on where to go from here in improving it? Any other feedback is also welcome, of course.
butterfly gone berserk
I have a new song ! Inspired by the numerous posts I've had the pleasure to listen here, I've added a tech touch to my music. My butterfly has decided to rebel against nature and has gained a synthetic voice... but fortunately, he soon gets rid of it and returns to real life.
début
just to stay in touch
Burn This Bridge
My first one in for the mefimusicchallenge! I won't get a chance to play with this before the end of the month so I'm going to post it as is, I think there's a lot more that can be done with it (aside from generally cleaning it up a bit) but I'd love to hear what you guys think!
Cross the 6s
The same old story. Boy meets girl. Boy seduces girl. Girl does one better and seduces the boy. In this case the boy is the Devil hisself.
You Don't Have To Be That Way
Crappy guitar/voice demo of a break-up song. The lyrics are a little emo, but what are ya gonna do?
from the bridge,
watching the river flow, I stumble upon some memories - more vivid than others.
boy's alright
little song i wrote while walking to work. lyrics inside.
OK Tire Radio Ad
I was recently asked to provide some guitar for a radio jingle. This was the 60 second result, sans droning announcer. I used my new Fractal Audio preamp direct to the board.
Three
Based off of 'Diagram' - which, I think, I've posted. Sort of a different structure. First time I've used distortion for a while. The second half is for delay pedal enthusiasts.
80x80
A song that sort of reminded me of the 80s but really isn't very 80s. Again, just an idea, not a whole production. Please, any criticism or suggestions are totally welcome. Thanks!
