a Voice in the Radio

I haven't posted in a while, and without any good reason. I have a LOT of half-finished stuff sitting on my hard drive, and with a day off, I decided it was time to record some vocals and get at least one song finished. [more inside]

Buy More Shit!

I liked the idea of taking a commercial like jingle and making it in to a song about anti-consumerism. It ended up being a little more elaborate than that. [more inside]

Virgin Ears & Old Man Lies

This is my attempt at a GBV-style rocker. I put a guitar solo at the end as (kind of) a goof. I hope the musical irony gods will forgive me. Mixing this was a real bitch. I think I could go back and mix this 20 more times and still not be happy, but I gotta let it go. Any specific mixing/EQ advice on this is appreciated. [more inside]

The Dudes - Live at Le Voyeur

Live jam from our one and only real show. What happens when four friends who've never been in a band, never had any formal music training, never played an instrument form a band, jam for six months, then have a show. We never did really learn what the hell we were doing, or write any songs, but occasionally we made some cool sounds together.

I'm Dreaming of a White Russian

Every year, I do some sort of travesty of a Christmas song for my music webcomic. This year, I decided to get crazy and do an in-character recording of it as the band in the strip. So the Awesome Boys are proud to present "(I'm Dreaming of a) White Russian." (the parens in the song title make it extra-Alternative).

BP Song

Another song from Saturday's set at Characters in Pomona. This is a new song about the Gulf spill- it's only the second time we've done it live, and it still a little rough in the middle part. Demo version.

One For The Road - Long Live Rock (Live)

The end of our set Saturday night, recorded from the crowd on my TASCAM DR-07. We opened up for East Bay Ray's new band The Killer Smiles, the band was pretty excited about it, and I think the energy really comes through. [more inside]

Real To Reels -Tribute to John Lennon

I wrote this on December 8th, 1980 right after I heard about John Lennon's murder. I was in college, in Albuquerque N.M., and was so upset I had to take a cold shower to calm down. I wrote it in the shower, and wrote it down when I dried off. We've played it in various bands ever since, and this version was recorded in Chicago in 1995. [more inside]

Power (Time to Turn)

Obviously, I couldn't decide on a title, so I used parentheses. Pretty straight-up rock, with synth adding some color to the guitar melodies, and a somewhat anthemic turn toward the end. [more inside]

Dark and Scary

My friend Bill got hit by a car while riding his bike in San Raphael, California last month. He's been in a coma, and broke his vertebrae, collarbone, ribs, and has been on a respirator, critical. He has a history of alcoholism, and meth. He came to the midwest because his mother was dying, and after she did, there were ghosts in her house. We wrote and recorded this three years ago when he was in the midwest in 2007. I was planning on finishing it for Halloween this year. But now it makes more sense to me. Wow. Sometimes music transcends time and space. [more inside]
