Every Single Last Time
I think I wrote and recorded a Gin Blossoms song? I'm pretty happy with how it came out, but I don't know if I can take any credit. This is just me channeling the 90s. I guess I should ask for advice about how to manage the ceilings when using limiters. (more inside) [more inside]
No Go
Short, rocking song I wrote about an idiot who's in over his head. It's built around a guitar part that was stuck in my head and a surf drum beat. [more inside]
warm for december (christmas cheese mix)
Song written with my old band, Big Ghost, about unseasonable New England weather. Bit of an oldy but goody, I threw together this recording to send to my old bandmates on the east coast as I live in sin in California. Hope you enjoy. If you can, please help me with toning down the harshness while keeping the excited sound. [more inside]
Three Way Mirror
Track one off our most recent release, a dual album set called Infrared & Ultraviolet. This is the first song on Ultraviolet. For once we get right to the point, & make a short & sweet 8 1/2 minutes. Made up on the spot - totally improvisational. Titled such because there's three of us & we mirror one another as we play. Plus, it breaks space. [more inside]
We Lose With Dignity
Riff rock and college football. [more inside]
Partial Photonic Boundary
Simple post rock instrumental.
Guitars, programmed drums, crowd sample. [more inside]
wake up song (in D: for Dog, did he begin to pray?)
This is one of two plus songs written by mistake/default around iphone wake-up tones. Y'know, you wake up at some godawful hour with that godwaffle loop in your ear and eventually you're going to make something of it. I mean...you'd hope, Godwaffles. You'd hope. [more inside]
Florida Lee
Carbon 7 is an improvisational/experimental trio that creates spontaneous music at the moment it's recorded. I left a tad of dialog at the beginning, so you could here our "process." Dennis gives Ron a hard time about choosing a key, then I call out C# & start it off. Clocks in at a whopping 26.5 minutes, but it evolves slowly the entire way. [more inside]
to the wolves
This is the only advice I have for new parents these days.
Had to salvage this song from a lost-when-near completed track, so the mixing is what I could work with, but I'm pretty happy with it. Enjoy! [more inside]
Curriculum Vibe
Almost ten years old: Came across one of my favorite songs from my band Big Ghost. One of our first attempts at home recording with drums. It's about backyard baseball, magic tricks, social anxiety and flirting. [more inside]
I Don't Want to Know
My attemp to ripoff the Pixies, Radiohead, etc..
Received Wisdom
Another fuzzy, rather lo-fi outing for Sredni Vashtar... [more inside]
Want Trouble
Moody, jazzy little tune that explodes towards the end. About the delicious dread of falling in love when both people have baggage.
This is my second big attempt at faking swing drums, so pointers would be helpful. As per usual, I started out wanting a sparse mix but it got away from me a bit. [more inside]
Nest Mess
Breezy song about hanging out in LA [more inside]
Kraid's Green Hill
You Don't Know Me
I came up with the chorus in the shower this morning and decided to record something by day's end. [more inside]
Lazy Rock
I miss the lazy rock of the 90's. Lean into the derivative. [more inside]
Tired Of Winning
Another track from my first solo album. Like a great many of these lyrics, it began as a joke, albeit a sardonic one. President Trump had done something else horrifying and I said, out loud to mrs. eustacescrubb, "he was right. I AM tired of winning!" [more inside]
Lift
Get your fingers snapping and your toes tapping. [more inside]
Summer Follows Redux
Impossible Bookings is a collaboration I kinda sorta foisted upon cicadaverse, who initially posted the instrumental version of this track 6 months ago. I put words to what he'd created, we each reworked what we had into shorter form, he remixed my vocals and added to the instrumentation...then life happened to us both. We caught up recently after a few months off, remastered it, and called it good. [more inside]
Adrenaline Hangover
This is a funny one - a collective demo that I suspect will always sound far, far better than any band recording we manage to cobble together. As the band's guitarist it burns a little bit to not have played or written a single note of this, but I can't argue with the end result.
The Ice World
A song about being the king of a frozen wasteland... of emotions [more inside]
Your Phone
Quasi-rock song with awkward, loping rythm, questionable tuning, and lyrics to nowhere. Utilizes the f word. [more inside]
The Ballad of Highway Boy
All this awful flood action has inspired me to dig up the sad old tail of Highway Boy, raised by his trucker brother, because his father was a hurricane and his mother was a cellar door. [more inside]
Uninvited Guest
Trap downtempo post blues rock. [more inside]
There with you...and some things never change...
the latest experiment in creativity...
Tough Love Black Eye
Punk, metal, jazz, slack, folk and noise. This pretty much typifies the grab bag that was my band, Big Ghost. Like trying to get Pavement and RHCP to agree on California rock. It's a mess, but it was our kinda mess. [more inside]
Fisherian Runaway (poison frog song)
First song written and recorded since I moved to Napa. Spooky grungy punk that maybe doesn't reflect my sunny new locale. Written about my drummer's frustration with dating, online and otherwise. Lyrics in fold. [more inside]
Sredni Vashtar - Epic
Not a cover of the Faith No More song. Oh no. [more inside]
Won't Take Long
A Ramonesy take on a recent Rolling Stones song
Anchors Aweigh
Some more punk rock from Spent - Anchors aweigh, pick up and go, anchors aweigh!
Heart's Attack
Another demo recording from Spent, this one a punk rock love song.
A Goddamn Avalanche
This is a thrashy proggy tune that's been brewing in my head for a few years. Guitars, bass, drums, and some Korg Minilogue synth giving it a Cult of Luna-ish feel in spots. [more inside]
Following You
A demo track from Spent about your favorite Facebook friend.
Down On My Knees
Catchy little punk rock number from my band Spent, straight from the garage. [more inside]
So Much for the Tolerant Left (Demo)
This song is dedicated to Richard Spencer's unknown assailant. [more inside]
The Elevator Clown
From the 12-21-14 Carbon 7 session Inter-Sol-Stice. We went from meeting every couple of months down to 1 or 2 a year, & I fell behind in mixing, so this was somewhat of a forgotten session. A minor epic at 18 minutes, but it holds together. [more inside]
Sleepwalker (Cover)
"Maybe I could be the one they adore—that could be my reputation." I had The Wallflowers' "Sleepwalker" in my head earlier and decided to learn the chords and record it. [more inside]
Starving (Cover)
"Something inside me's changed—I was so much younger yesterday." I learned and recorded this cover of Hailee Steinfeld's "Starving" in a half hour one afternoon last month. [more inside]
pace
Another night and I can pick up where I left off today
Another drink and I will sleep right, and the dreams will stay away
I thought about what I should do now
but I'd rather stay in and keep out from the cold
...you know I'd rather be alone
murmurs...
Man Of Fantasy
My high school band, Avatar. We wrote this in 1979 when we were 17, recorded at a one-off reunion in 1986. [more inside]
summer follows
instrumental guitar rock. A bit of messy improv guitar on the quiet parts...
distinct queries
All rock instrumental...no vocals... [more inside]
Christmas party for one
Recorded December 24th, 2016 [more inside]
King of the World (Cover)
Super 8's "King of the World" is one of my favorite long-lost '90s songs. [more inside]
New World
Going Nowhere (working studio mix)
This is a working rough mix of a song I originally posted a rough acoustic guitar demo of here on MeFi music a couple months back... This version gives the tune the full band treatment, and is part of a larger full-length project, "Tragicomic Americana," I'm working on with a new group called The Wishing Well Divers. [more inside]
Teenage Love 2000
A song about love
Hip with the kids
Delirious, teeth-gritted ballad about weapons of mass destruction and grass roots violence. Also, a breathless love song from one monster to another. Also, a way to distract myself while this horrifying evening plays out.
Rough mix. Suggestions welcome. Lyrics past break. [more inside]
Plain Dislike You
I felt like destroying something so I destroyed this tune.
